Tragedy struck a West Allis family this past Sunday as a mother and her son died in separate automobile accidents.
The first accident occurred around 1 A.M., when a hit-and-run driver struck the mother near the intersection of South 81st Street and Greenfield Avenue. According to press reports, the mother was laying in the middle the street when a driver ran her over. Police arrested the hit-and-run driver later on Sunday for leaving the scene of an accident. While the investigation into the accident is continuing, alcohol is suspected as factor. In addition, distracted driving may have contributed to the crash. A resident who lives near the intersection stated that "People don't stop. They don't even look. They're on their phones or whatever."
The second accident occurred around 5:30 A.M. on Sunday at the intersection of Becher Street and National Avenue, when the son of the mother was heading to the hospital to see his mother. A suspected drunk driver struck the vehicle in which the son was a passenger, causing the vehicle to roll over and killing the son. Other passengers in the vehicle were also injured.
While it is certainly unusual for a mother and son to be killed on the same day in separate accidents, automobile accidents are unfortunately a common occurrence in Wisconsin, especially when alcohol or distracted driving is factored in.
